Tom begins by asking where the story came from #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
Lone tells us that her producer came to her with the idea & they were keen to explore why they both work in this industry #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
Why do they make films rather than get a proper job! #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
The producer in question was Stephen Woolley.
Tom asks about the tone and how they chose to approach the material #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
Lone: it is quite a light film but it takes the situation the characters are in absolutely seriously #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
Because it is a serious subject - lots of people on the home front died #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
But she's also incredibly afraid of being pretentious, so she always leans towards including humour #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
She describes one particularly shocking part of the story as "the stone in your shoe" of this film - but it was necessary #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
Lone tells us that one thing she feels she gets better at as the years go by is having the certaintity of her own morals #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
And that helps guide the way you tell a story #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
Lone says she feels you have to know you're the right person to tell a particular story and feel like you have the right to do so #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
She has come across scripts that need to be made, but she knew she wasn't the right person to do it #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
You have to choose - you can't make a good film if you just approach it as work #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
Lone: I try not to get too emotionally involved whilst making a film #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
You don't want to be up at 4 in the morning crying down the phone about something not working #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
That might be why I like working in England! The people are a bit calmer here, whilst also being good at their jobs & very humble #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
You don't necessarily go in with all the camera angles set in stone, but you also have to watch with your technical brain #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
Lone confirms that they weren't aware of Christopher Nolan's film whilst making Their Finest & the Dunkirk film-within-a-film! #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
Making Dogme films many years ago made her trust in the crew and the materials you have on the day #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
Lone spoke about her work with Dogme 95 in her David Lean lecture at BAFTA in 2014. She is the first woman to have delivered this lecture at the organisation.
You make the most of what's to hand - whether that be the script or the skills of the people you've gathered around you #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
Lone tells us that she's done so many jobs within the industry - director, editor, 1st AD - that she's always had that craft... #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
...background. And she thinks that that may have shielded her from the worst sexism of the film industry #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
Lone has worked as a director, writer, producer, assistant director, second unit director, script supervisor and more.
She's often worked in male-heavy environments but has been very lucky to work with respectful collaborators #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
Lone particularly praises the work of @GemmaArterton and Bill Nighy - they all worked together to bring truth to their characters #DUKFinest
— Directors UK (@Directors_UK) September 26, 2017
That's a wrap! A big thank you to Lone Scherfig and to moderator @tomharps. @theirfinest is out on DVD now #DUKFinest
