A practical one day course on how to develop, own and pitch your next project.

Directors UK is committed to strengthening the role of the director as a true creative at the heart of the story. We believe that the director should be at the very centre of the development process.

In order to strengthen the skills and confidence to achieve this, Directors UK is offering a free, one-day course for Full and Associate members which will help focus and turn your creative idea into a treatment, ready to pitch to commissioners in the UK.

The Director as Entrepreneur
Friday 18 November, 9am - 6.30pm
Directors UK, 22 Stukeley Street, London, WC2B 5LR

The course will help you:

  • develop an idea for a series or single project
  • become business ready for co-production opportunities
  • understand and practice pitching to UK broadcasters

The day will include:

  • an in-depth case study with a successful series director and producer who have made their own franchise
  • a session with an established actors’ agent, on how to get talent attached to a project
  • a business session examining owning your Intellectual Property and starting a limited company
  • practical tips from successful directors and producers on pitching and developing your own unique communication style.

Led by director Philippa Collie Cousins (Happy Now, The Deadness of Dad), confirmed tutors include directors James Hawes (Doctor Who, Penny Dreadful, Undercover), Chris Young (The Inbetweeners), Guy Jenkin (Outnumbered) and Susanna White (Parade’s End, Our Kind of Traitor) with Mark Rogers, business affairs consultant at Media Wizards.

This course has been developed to help directors take the next step in their careers by becoming more entrepreneurial, whilst retaining their creative vision and the desire to see their ideas on screen. At the end of the course Directors UK will endeavor to assist in engaging with appropriate commissioning editors as part of its on-going career development support.

Up to 15 directors will be selected based on the merit of a written application in one of three areas: film, TV drama or TV comedy series. We welcome practitioners from all directing formats and encourage applicants who would like to develop skills in other genres.

In light of active Directors UK campaigns we encourage applications from BAME and women directors, as the industry recognises that both are currently under-represented within film and TV directing generally.

Directors UK is committed to providing access to training wherever possible and will be offering assistance to successful applicants for childcare or other care needs on the day. Successful applicants will be provided with further information.
